The Sound Installation |

(i) Ten period radios in the gallery represent the 'domestic' experience of listening to the shipping forecast. Samples of area forecasts are split into their four basic parts: Sea Area - Wind Direction and Speed - Precipitation - Visibility and selected randomly by computer, within the formal structure, so continually inventing possible forecasts. For example: Finisterre - Easterly 6 to gale 8 - Squally Showers - Good The familiar words and phrases are separated and stretched allowing the listener time to savour the beauty and romance of this enigmatic language. The computer also selects which radio(s) will output each individual sample, therefore creating the effect of movement around the space. ii) Sounds of sea, wind, rain and shipping provide an ambient backdrop to remind us of the real purpose of the shipping forecast - to protect the lives of those at sea. |
